orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Thursday indicted Empat Lawang regent Budi Anthony and his wife Suzan for allegedly bribing former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar to secure a favorable ruling in an election dispute in 2013.
The antigraft body accused the couple of wiring Rp 10 billion (US$690,707) and $500,000 to Akil for securing Budi's victory at the court.
'The transfer was meant to influence the court's decision on the Empat Lawang election,' prosecutor Rini Triningsih said while reading the indictment at the corruption court.
Akil has been sentenced to life for receiving hundreds of billions of rupiah in bribes from several regional heads, including Budi, for issuing such favorable rulings.
Budi is the seventh culprit netted in the case with the antigraft body currently working to implicate remaining potential suspects, namely South Lampung Regent Rycko Menoza, Buton Regent Syamsu Umar Abdul Samiun and Golkar Party East Java branch head Zainuddin Amali, who is accused of bribing Akil on behalf of East Java Governor Sukarwo.
In addition to the corruption charges, KPK prosecutors also charged the couple with perjury after they were found to have given false testimonies during Akil's trial in 2014.
