State-owned oil and gas company Pertamina will soon start selling 5.5-kilogram non-subsidized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi, with a price set at Rp 80,000 (US$5.53).
"Official sales will begin on Oct. 1 in Greater Jakarta, excluding Bogor," said Pertamina's external relations manager for Central Java and Yogyakarta, Roberth MV Dumatubun, on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The 5.5-kg cylinders target middle- and high-income people, especially apartment residents who rarely use large amounts of LPG.
"Our target market segment is apartment residents, especially women, who rarely cook. They will be able to lift the cylinder alone since it's not as heavy as the 12-kg versions," said Roberth.
He added that market trialing would be focused on Greater Jakarta only and that there were no plans yet to sell the new-sized cylinder in Semarang since the current demand for 6-kg cylinders was not very high in the Central Java capital city.
"We actually already offer a 6-kg LPG cylinder in almost all regions, including Central Java. But people still prefer to use the 3-kg or 12-kg," said Roberth. (kes)(++++)
