Pro-democracy protesters gather at the Democracy monument in Bangkok, Thailand, Saturday
Pro-democracy protesters in Thailand's capital have defied a ban on protests and staged a rare rally against the country's ruling military government.
More than 200 people marched peacefully Saturday to Bangkok's Democracy Monument, a symbolic location that has become a rallying point for protests in recent years.
Protesters carried anti-junta banners as a ring of police kept watch over the event but did not break it up.
In May 2014, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, who was head of the army at the time, led a coup that overthrew the elected government after months of sometimes violent street politics. Now the country's appointed prime minister, Prayuth says elections will not take place until at least 2017. (k)
