est Sumatra residents will separately use four different Idul Adha (Islamic Day of Sacrifice) prayer schedules this week as different Muslim groups in the province have announced their own dates to celebrate the Islamic holy day.
While Muhammadiyah has set Wednesday, and the government, Thursday, as the day on which to observe Idul Adha, the Naqsabandiyah sect of Islam, which has a stronghold in Padang, has told thousands of its followers to hold Idul Adha prayers on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Padang Pariaman-based Sattariyah sect said that it will observe Idul Adha on Friday.
Indonesian Ulema Council's (MUI) West Sumatra chapter head Syamsul Bahri Khatib said such differences were acceptable as long as the government and the groups set the date of the Idul Adha celebration based on methods outlined in the Koran and hadiths. 'The most important thing is that a Muslim group does not disrupt other Muslims who celebrate Idul Adha on different dates,' he said.
