Motorcycle maker PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM) has said it plans to increase the selling prices of its products due to the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar.
YIMM marketing assistant general manager Mohammad Masykur confirmed the plan, saying that the price increases would vary, depending on the type of product.
'I cannot remember the exact [price increase] for each model, but it will range from Rp 100,000 to Rp 500,000, depending on the model,' he said as quoted by kontan.co.id in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The rupiah exchange rate touched 14,465 per dollar as of 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg data, as quoted by kontan.co.id.
Masykur said Yamaha Indonesia's manufacturing activities were still running normally despite the country's economic slowdown. The company had not yet carried out any employee layoffs, instead responding to the situation by reducing employees' working hours, he added.
Masykur predicted that the situation would continue until the end of the year. To avoid an overstock risk at its plant, he added, Yamaha had decided to introduce the new selling prices. The new prices will be valid starting from December, or whenever people's purchasing power returned to normal. (ags/ebf)(++++)
