The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has sent a team to Mina, where a stampede took place during the annual haj on Thursday, to see whether Indonesian citizens were among the 310 people that died in the incident.
'The team from the KJRI is at the location. The team is seeking information and coordinating with local authorities,' Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arrmanatha Nasir said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.
At least 310 people were killed in a stampede in Mina valley, some 5 kilometers from the holy city of Mecca. The Saudi Arabian civil defense directorate said at least 450 other pilgrims were injured in the stampede.
Thursday's stampede occurred less than two weeks after a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing at least 111 pilgrims and injuring more than 390. (edn)
