Greater Jakarta: Lawmakers reject Asian Games land handover

T

he planned development of an athletes'€™ village in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, may be hampered after members of the House of Representatives rejected the idea of handing over the necessary land from the State Secretariat to the city administration.

The Jakarta governor'€™s assistant on culture and tourism Sylviana Murni said that during a recent meeting at the House building in Central Jakarta with House Commission II overseeing regional autonomy, State Secretary Pratikno said the handover of the land was in the public interest, namely to build an athletes'€™ village for the 2018 Asian Games. The village would then function as a rusunawa (low-cost apartment block).

However, the lawmakers denied the idea, saying that the State Secretariat '€œshould supervise state assets'€.

However, Sylviana said that construction would continue despite the rejection. She said that by law, the State Secretariat did not need approval from lawmakers if the handover was for the purpose of public interest.

'€œWe will carry out the ground-breaking soon,'€ Sylviana said at City Hall recently.
