Islands in focus: Open defecation still rampant in C. Java

R

egional administration officials in Central Java have reported that villagers in hundreds of subdistricts in the province still practice open defecation, mainly because of limited access to proper sanitation facilities.

Purbalingga Health Agency'€™s disease control and environmental health (P2PL) unit head Semedi, revealed that only 11, or 5.9 percent, out of the regency'€™s 228 subdistricts, were fully free of open-defecation practices.

The neighboring Cilacap regency is also facing a similar problem.

'€œSome 48 percent of Cilacap residents, or 160,000 families, are still practicing unhealthy habits, including defecating in house yards, the sea or rivers. They don'€™t understand that such practices affect the quality of the ground water they drink,'€ Cilacap Health Agency'€™s water, drainage and waste water management unit head Gontho Pramuhargono said.
