Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said announced on Wednesday that fuel prices would remain unchanged for the next three months, from October to December.

He said the government had considered it not yet necessary to change fuel prices. '€œThe fuel prices will stay the same,'€ the minister said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Sudirman further explained that the government had determined that fuel prices would be evaluated every three months, starting from Oct. 1.

'€œWe want to maintain price stability in the market. As a six-monthly fuel price evaluation is too long a period, we decided to carry out evaluations once every three months,'€ he said.

Sudirman explained that the ministry changed the interval based on input from the House of Representatives Commission VII, which oversees energy. This decision, he said, would stop the government from changing fuel prices too often, which could trigger fluctuations in the prices of other commodities, in particular basic commodities.

The ministry'€™s oil and gas director general IGN Wiratmaja said the government'€™s main reason for maintaining fuel prices from October to December was to maintain Indonesia'€™s economic stability.

'€œSo, in the next three months, both individuals and business players have certainty [on fuel prices]. The government will determine the next fuel prices in January 2016,'€ said Wiratmaja.

Based on the government'€™s decision, from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 the price of premium fuel outside of Java, Madura and Bali will remain at Rp 7,300 (49 US cents) per liter; subsidized diesel at Rp 6,900 per liter; while kerosene will cost Rp 2,500 per liter.

State oil and gas company Pertamina will determine the prices for Java, Madura and Bali after it coordinates with the government and considers prevailing socio-economic conditions.

Currently, Pertamina is selling premium fuel in Java, Madura and Bali at Rp 7,400 per liter.

Wiratmaja said based on his calculations, from October to December, the premium fuel price in Java, Madura and Bali should be Rp 7,900 per liter and diesel Rp 6,250 per liter. (ebf)(++++)
