With the belief that there is an artist inside each of us web developer-turned-entrepreneur Kevin Osmond and his crew created Printerous.
Printerous digital printing company has recently expanded its business and launched an art marketplace service called Printerous Shop, which allows visitors to express their taste and produce their own artistic works.
'Printerous Shop aims to become an alternative marketing channel for artists to add to their revenue streams,' said web developer Kevin Osmond during a discussion at the Artotel Hotel in Sudirman, Central Jakarta.
Visitors can use in their designs for throw pillows, magnets, stationery, postcards, greeting cards, tote bags, t-shirts and cases and skins for smartphones and gadgets.
To have their artwork produced, visitors simply upload their designs to the Printerous system. They can choose whether their designs will be used in a single category or more.
Printerous will then print their designs to be produced into tangible art products and calculate the production cost. Afterwards, visitors can pay Printerous to order their products and have them delivered to their doorstep.
Allowing visitors to produce their own artworks is only one of the main features that the marketplace offers. Additionally, Printerous has also collaborated with hundreds of independent artists who want to promote and sell their artwork to a wider audience.
There are currently 150 independent artists showcasing more than 700 artworks and 15,000 products at Printerous.
The product creation process for artists is similar with that for visitors. The only difference is that artists have the ability to mark up their product prices to make a profit. Printerous, therefore, acts as the product manufacturer and distributor to assist artists in selling their works. Most of the artists' works in Printerous feature the current design trend of going vintage with a touch of digital mash up. There are also some works that display the artists' proficiency in working with digital paint brushes to create classic looking works such as Two Worlds from artist Pamela Suryadjaya.

Despite of the uniqueness and exclusivity of the artworks sold in Printerous, the majority of the artist-made products are affordable.
On average, Kevin said that product prices range between Rp 100,000 and Rp 250,000. Only a few products, he added, were sold above Rp 1 million.
For now, Kevin said that Printerous allowed artists to sell their products to all regions in Indonesia and Singapore.
In the future, he hopes the marketplace will expand its distribution channels and export artists' works to the global market.
'There is a high demand for high quality artwork. I am a fan of arts myself and I want local artists and their works to gain more exposure from art collectors and fans,' he said.
Kevin, however, added that not all local artists could be accepted as partners by Printerous, which would carefully select only the best independent artists since the marketplace aims to showcase and sell original and unique works that come with high quality and values.
'We do not want to display and sell designs that are commonly available via Google image search,' Kevin said.
'We want to maintain a high standard to cater the market demand for high quality and locally made artworks from local independent artists.'
Kevin said artists who wanted to collaborate with Printerous needed to submit examples of their past work first.
The Printerous team then evaluate their work before making a decision whether they have reached the minimum standard needed to be featured in the marketplace.
The selection process from Printerous is what makes this marketplace different from other similar services in Indonesia.

Before Printerous, there have been numerous digital startups that allow visitors to have their designs printed or to set up their own shops ' but none of them requires a selection process before they can begin selling their products.
One of the artists selected by Printerous as a partner was digital illustrator Ykha Amelz.
In Ykha's Printerous Shop page, she sells her illustration designs on magnets, tote bags, Macbook skins, postcards, picture frames and canvas. Her product prices range between Rp 100,000 to Rp 220,000 per piece.
Ykha said the tight quality control imposed by Printerous was very important to push local artists to attain the reach their highest potential.
She is aware it's not easy to educate people to have an appreciation of local artists and their works.
'There are many talented Indonesian artists and I like to collect their works. However, only a few of them have the facilities to properly publicize or produce their works,' Ykha said.
'Printerous, in my opinion, offers a solution. My collaboration with Printerous has allowed me to produce, pack and distribute my works easily.'
