he Denpasar Corruption Court sentenced on Wednesday suspended West Lombok Regent Zaini Arony to four years in prison for the crime of extorting money from a businessman in order to grant a permit for a tourist resort in Sekotong regency, West Nusa Tenggara province.

Presiding judge Prim Haryadi said that the court had fined the regent Rp 200 million (US$14,285).

'€œThe defendant was proven guilty of corruption as he was charged,'€ Haryadi was quoted by kompas.com as saying.

Both prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission and the defendant'€™s lawyers are considering an appeal of the verdict.

The prosecutors earlier asked the court to sentence the Golkar Party politician to serve seven years in prison.
