he Denpasar Corruption Court sentenced on Wednesday suspended West Lombok Regent Zaini Arony to four years in prison for the crime of extorting money from a businessman in order to grant a permit for a tourist resort in Sekotong regency, West Nusa Tenggara province.
Presiding judge Prim Haryadi said that the court had fined the regent Rp 200 million (US$14,285).
'The defendant was proven guilty of corruption as he was charged,' Haryadi was quoted by kompas.com as saying.
Both prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission and the defendant's lawyers are considering an appeal of the verdict.
The prosecutors earlier asked the court to sentence the Golkar Party politician to serve seven years in prison.
