17-year-old BMX rider from Bandung died on Saturday after performing a dangerous trick during the seventh Indonesia Open X Sports Championship (IOXC).
The incident took place at 4:30 p.m. as Muhammad Taufan Munggaran, the victim, and other riders were competing in the qualification stages of the competition, held from Friday to Sunday at Telkom University Convention Hall in Bandung.
Taufan was attempting to complete a BMX trick in front of judges, but lost balance on landing. He fell to the ground, his bicycle's handlebars hitting his chest. 'The medical team rushed to help him and immediately took him to hospital,' Telkom University student Gustaf Pandu Pranata, who witnessed the incident, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday. Taufan, however, died en route to the hospital.
