Islands in focus: Appointment of Medan acting mayor refused

T

he Medan legislative council in North Sumatra on Monday rejected Randiman Tarigan being sworn in as acting mayor, on the grounds that he was under examination by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Randiman, who has been questioned in relation to alleged bribery in the interpellation of North Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho and the approval of the province'€™s 2013 budget in his capacity as North Sumatra provincial administration secretary, was sworn in on Monday.

The council'€™s speaker Henry Jhon Hutagalung expressed concerns that the investigation into Randiman by KPK investigators would influence his performance as acting mayor.'€œThe council will be burdened by his problems,'€ Henry said on Monday in Medan.
