National scene: S. Sumatra ex-official admits accepting bribes

F

ormer South Sumatra official Rizal Abdullah has admitted that he accepted bribes in the construction of an athletes'€™ residential complex in Jakabaring, South Sumatra, that has dragged several prominent politicians behind bars.

Rizal, who was previously South Sumatra public works agency head, said that he had accepted money from developer PT Duta Graha Indah director Mohammad El Idris for the construction of the residences and a multifunctional building.

'€œ[Delivered in] two terms, the amounts were Rp 100 million and Rp 250 million,'€ Rizal said during a hearing at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday.

The construction project has previously resulted in the convictions of, among others, former Democratic Party treasurer and lawmaker Muhammad Nazaruddin, fellow party member and lawmaker Angelina Sondakh and former Youth and Sports Ministry secretary Wafid Muharram.

Nazaruddin was found guilty of accepting Rp 4.6 billion linked to the construction of the athletes'€™ residential complex, which was intended for accommodation for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.

He is currently serving a seven-year sentence at Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung, West Java.
