he panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday rejected a defense statement from former energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik, and ordered his trial to continue.
Last week, in his defense statement, Jero demanded the court quash Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors' allegations against him in multiple graft cases and stop the trial hearing 'for the sake of the law'.
In their response, the court's panel of judges ordered KPK prosecutors to start questioning witnesses in the case to confirm their allegations that Jero had had a role in multiple corruption scandals while serving as culture and tourism minister and energy and mineral resources minister between 2004 and 2014.
The panel of judges ordered Jero to deliver his defense statement only after the KPK prosecutors had made their sentence demand.
'The claims that the investigation documents are not consistent with the indictment documents and that the defendant was criminalized [by the KPK] is the aspect of the investigation that will be examined at the next trial sessions, thus, his defense statements [asking to halt the hearing] should be rejected,' judge Casmaya said at the court on Tuesday.
