he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday extended its wiretapping cooperation with cellular operators PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel) and PT Indosat (ISAT), which was slated to expire at the end of this year.
Telkomsel and Indosat are two of seven cellular operators with which the commission antigraft body has been working since its establishment in 2004 to surveil potential suspects in graft investigations.
'As for other operators like PT XL Axiata, landline provider PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Hutchison 3 Indonesia and Sampoerna Telekomunikasi Indonesia, our contracts with them are still ongoing,' deputy KPK chairman Johan Budi told reporters after the signing of the contract extension, which was witnessed by Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara at KPK headquarters.
Under Article 12 of Law No.20/2002 on the KPK, the antigraft body has the authority to wiretap without having to acquire a court permit, a requirement imposed on other law enforcement agencies such as the police and the Attorney General's Office (AGO).
Wiretapping is regarded as the most important of the KPK's investigative abilities, as without it, the commission would not be able to catch corrupt officials red-handed accepting bribes. The House of Representatives is currently trying to revise Article 12 of the KPK law so that the commission would be required to obtain a court permit before wiretapping suspects' phones.
