Wayang (traditional puppet) groups from all over the country are ready to entertain Jakartans during the Puppets of the Archipelago Festival (Wayang Nusantara Festival) on Oct. 7-11 at the Fine Arts and Ceramic Museum in the historic Kota Tua area in West Jakarta.

According to Jakarta Tourism Agency head Purba Hutapea, the festival was held as part of an effort to preserve local cultures and develop the art of puppetry.

"Hopefully the festival can provide educational and quality entertainment for the visitors of Kota Tua," said Purba during the festival's opening ceremony on Wednesday.

The event is set to feature 11 different wayang plays from different regions in the archipelago, including Wayang Kulit Surakarta, Wayang Golek Ringkang and other traditional puppet arts from East Java, Yogyakarta and Banyumas.

The Culture and Tourism Agency's Art Museum management unit head Dyah Damayanti said the government fully supported the festival as it showcased and nurtured local artists' creativity.

'€œIt is important to introduce and promote the art of wayang to a larger audience, especially the younger generation, which inherit traditional cultures,'€ said Dyah.

Following the festival's opening ceremony on Wednesday evening, Getar Wayang Ringkang group from Bandung, West Java, entertained the attendants with a puppet play called Sumantri Ngenger, which tells a story about Bambang Sumantri's sincerity to serve the leader of Maespati, Prabu Arjuna Sasrabahu. Its lively and colorful presentation with vibrant music and Sundanese humor successfully entertained the viewers. (nov/kes)(++++)
