Member of Indonesian Press Council (DP) Yosep âStanleyâ Adi Prasetyo suggested on Thursday the Batam District Court deport British journalists Neil Bonner and Becky Posser for visa violations
ember of Indonesian Press Council (DP) Yosep 'Stanley' Adi Prasetyo suggested on Thursday the Batam District Court deport British journalists Neil Bonner and Becky Posser for visa violations.
'Deportation is sufficient for their visa violations. We will be questioned about the case when we host for the International Press Freedom assembly in 2017,' said Stanley who testified as an expert witness for the defense in the trial.
According to Stanley, the continuation of the trial was no longer reasonable as their journalistic activities were not a crime.
Bonner told the court that his documentary film aimed to describe cooperation between the Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean navies to tackle piracy in the Malacca Strait.
The trial has been adjourned until Oct. 19 when judges will hear the prosecutors' sentence demands.
The filmmakers have been charged under the Immigration Law, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, for working in the country while on tourist visas.
The journalists, along with nine Indonesians were arrested by the Indonesian Navy on May 29 near Serapat Island, in Batam waters, while performing a reenactment for the film.
