Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi
The government is set to provide a lifetime allowance for outstanding athletes in the Olympics in appreciation of their achievements.
'The allowance will be distributed starting from 2016 and will be valid for a lifetime,' said Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi in Bali on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.
According to Imam, the ministry was currently preparing the regulation, which included an allowance of Rp 20 million (US$1,474) per month for gold medalists, Rp 15 million for silver medalists and Rp 10 million for bronze medalists.
The ministry also called on private enterprise and other institutions to provide insurance for the athletes.
'If the state budget is available, I will create an insurance model for these athletes at the beginning of my term. We actually need a state-owned enterprise to manage their welfare,' said Imam.
Previously, the ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State Civil Service Board (BKN) head, Bima Harya Wibisana, regarding functional positions for sports coaches and assistant coaches.
'The MoU aims to provide opportunities and prospects to sports coaches and assistant coaches. [We] also offer professional allowances so that they can increase their standards and potential while upgrading their careers within the bureaucracy,' said Imam.(++++)
