URWOKERTO: Anti-corruption activists in Central Java have expressed their anger to Governor Ganjar Pranowo and his entourage for spending Rp 2.3 billion (US$170,200) of provincial budget funds on a recent 13-day international trip in which they visited three countries.
Ronny Maryanto of Central Java Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism Investigation and Eradication Committee (KP2KKN) said that Ganjar, a politician from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), had spent most of his time in Suriname, the Netherlands and Germany attending ceremonial events.
'The governor and his entourage, for example, went to Paramaribo to attend the 125th anniversary ceremony of the arrival of Javanese people in Suriname, regardless of the fact that central government officials were already present at the event,' Ronny said.
Separately, Central Java Legislative Council (DPRD) member Bambang Haryanto Bahrudddin said that the DPRD had already acknowledged the visit, whose the governor considered as an attempt to promote tourism and investment in Central Java. 'We will assess the results [of the visit] later. If it is positive, it's what we have been expecting. If not, what for?' the PDI-P politician said.
