overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has floated the idea of transforming the Thousand Islands regency to resemble Maldives by inviting investors to develop the area.
To support his goal, Ahok said he would allow investors to reclaim the islands.
'[Investors] can reclaim the islands and build villas too,' he said over the weekend during the inauguration of a park on Untung Jawa Island. He, however, said that all the islands belonged to the Jakarta administration and could not be sold.
Ahok said that he would help investors obtain reclamation permits.
'Investors can process their permits through the PTSP [one-stop integrated service]. In less than one year they can break ground,' he said.
The city administration is collaborating with the Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister and Tourism Ministry to develop the regency's tourism, according to Ahok.
'I have instructed all parties to speed up permit issuance. We can make the regency like the Maldives,' he said.
