National scene: Gayus gets another permit to mourn father

F

ormer tax official and graft convict Gayus H. Tambunan, who is notorious as an inmate with frequent illegal jaunts, obtained a permit to leave his prison cell in Gunung Sindur, Bogor, West Java, to attend his father'€™s funeral last Tuesday.

Gunung Sindur Penitentiary head Gumilar Budimulya said that Gayus was only permitted to pay homage to his father for 30 minutes at PGI Hospital in Cikini, Central Jakarta.

'€œHe left the prison at 6 p.m. and was only allowed to mourn for 30 minutes,'€ Gumilar said on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com. He said Gayus returned at 9:30 p.m. on the same day.

Gumilar claimed that Gayus had followed the proper procedures to obtain the permit, although the documents were only ready at 3 p.m.

Gayus was transferred from Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung to Gunung Sindur after violating an exit permit.

He was photographed having a meal with friends at a restaurant when he was only supposed to attend a divorce hearing at the North Jakarta Religious Court on Sept. 9.

Gayus left his cell at the police'€™s Kelapa Dua maximum security detention center in Depok, West Java, on Nov. 3, 2010, after bribing the warden and flew to Bali with his wife and children.

On Nov. 4, 2010, Gayus, who wore a wig, was caught by journalists'€™ cameras while watching an international tennis match.
