The House of Representatives Legislation Body (Baleg) deputy chairman Firman Soebagyo has said that discussion of a draft revision of Law No.30/2002 on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had been delayed.

Speaking at the House complex in Jakarta on Monday, Firman said the delay was because the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the prime driver of the KPK Law revision, had not yet submitted its revised draft of the bill.

'€œSo far, there has been no revised draft bill handed to us. Once we have received it, we will discuss it,'€ he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Apart from the KPK Law revision, Baleg has also delayed discussions on the national amnesty bill.

Firman said Baleg would discuss the two draft bills simultaneously. However, he could not confirm how long discussion of the two bills would be delayed.

Separately, House deputy speaker Agus Hermanto, also a lawmaker from the Democratic Party faction, said the KPK Law revision was not yet needed.

'€œThe Democratic Party faction believes that we don'€™t need to revise the KPK Law for now,'€ he said.

The politician further explained that one ongoing point of debate in the KPK Law draft revision concerned the period of existence of the anti-graft body, which would be limited to only 12 years according to the current version the draft bill.

Agus said although the Democratic Party had rejected several points in the KPK Law draft revision, changes to the bill would depend on the government'€™s approval and also needed majority support from the House'€™s factions. (ebf)
