C

entral Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo revealed on Wednesday that he and his entourage had spent Rp 2 billion (US$142,857) of the provincial budget on recent trips to Suriname, the Netherlands and Germany.

'€œThe budget will be audited by the Supreme Audit Agency [BPK]. I have prepared the report [about the visits],'€ Ganjar was quoted as saying by kompas.com.

He rejected criticism that he had wasted public funds for the overseas visits, saying that the trips had a direct impact on the province'€™s economic development.

Ganjar said after the visits that he had received an invitation to deliver a speech on disaster mitigation at a UN forum in Italy.

'€œ[According to] the invitation, the event will take place at the end of this month. But I will wait to hear what the public thinks about me delivering a speech at the forum,'€ he added.

Before visiting the three countries, Ganjar took trips to Australia and China. Activists have also criticized the governor'€™s overseas trips.
