ssuming the role of Nyai Ontosoroh in the early years of her career was evidently influential for actress and stage producer Happy Salma.
The enigmatic, strong character from Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind), the debut novel of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, has also been embodied in Happy's latest jewelry line Tulola.
Happy said she had asked her business partner Sri Luce Rusna to read the novel before they decided to create jewelry with designs popular in the early part of the last century.
The collection, themed Women of Bumi Manusia, was launched after a long process of discussion and research.
'The whole process took up to five months,' said Happy as reported by tribunnews.com on Thursday.
There are three sets of jewelry, each inspired by the character of Nyai Ontosoroh, Annelies Mellema and Magda Peters from the novel.
'We adopted motifs unique to Indonesia and created our own. We have committed to launching a new collection every year that can reflect the rich culture and natural resources of Indonesia,' she said.
