The Jakarta Police arrested at least 10 people for throwing rocks at buses coming from Bandung, West Java, on the day before the final match of the President's Cup fielding Persib Bandung soccer team and Sriwijaya FC team from Palembang, South Sumatra.
South Jakarta spokesman Comr. Aswin said the men, aged 17 to 29, were arrested after they threw rocks and other items at buses passing along the Jl. MT Haryono toll road section in East Jakarta and the Jl. Gatot Subroto section in South Jakarta on Saturday.
"They said they were Jakmania members, but they didn't have any Jakmania items on them,' Aswin said as reported by kompas.com, referring to the supporters of Jakarta soccer team Persija Jakarta, who are rivals of Persib Bandung.
Jakmania members have opposed the soccer match being held in Jakarta. Both the Jakarta Police and the city administration endorsed the event being hosted by Jakarta amid concerns over possible clashes between Persib Bandung supporters and Jakmania.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said on Friday that 10,000 police officers and 3,000 military officers would be deployed to guard the match, which will be attended by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
Meanwhile, two Bandung-registered vehicles parked at Bung Karno sports stadium were vandalized, with the windscreens of an Avanza and a Jeep being smashed early Saturday and their owners admitted to hospitals.
'We suspect that they were Jakmania members. They looked for D-licensed vehicles from Bandung to vandalize,' said a police officer who asked for anonymity.
Meanwhile, one passenger of a Primajasa bus was hit in the eye by a stone that was thrown at the bus on the Jl. Gatot Subroto section of the inner-city toll road in South Jakarta. The bus was not carrying Persib Bandung supporters but passengers from Bandung to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
Dodon, one of the passengers, said dozens of people threw rocks at the bus at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. 'Some 30 people threw stones at our bus near the Pancoran monument,' Dodon said. (bbn)
