The South Jakarta Police have arrested five alleged kidnappers of Safira Permatasari, a student of the University of Indonesia.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian has expressed his appreciation for the quick response from the South Jakarta Police that managed to solve the problem in less than 24 hours. '€œThank God, Sister Safira has been saved and the kidnappers have been arrested,'€ said Tito in Jakarta on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.

Tito said that in any kidnapping case, saving the victim should be the first priority for police officers and arresting the culprits should be the second one.

'€œThe double success [saving the victims and arresting the culprits] of the South Jakarta Police deserves appreciation. I congratulate South Jakarta Police for this achievement,'€ Tito added.

Safira was kidnapped in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, at about 10 a.m. on her way to University of Indonesia campus on Monday. The car that took Safira was hit by another car. When Safira wanted to move to a taxi, the people forced her to enter to their car.

Safira is now in the process of recovering from the trauma due to the kidnapping, according to Tito, adding that the motive behind the crime was US$1 million ransom.

The five alleged kidnappers are Ali, Norman, Ijul, Hadi and Rully. They face 12 years in prison for their crimes. (bbn)
