he Jakarta Transportation Agency and city-owned bus operator PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to give the company Public Service Obligation (PSO) funding worth Rp 940 billion (US$67.68 million) for its operations this year.
Transportation Agency head Andri Yansah said after the signing ceremony on Wednesday that he hoped the funding could be used to increase the company's services, so Transjakarta could become a main mode of transport for Jakartans.
'The company should make improvements in all sectors, including services, buying more buses and repairing bus lanes,' he said.
However, Andi said that the funds could not be used right away, as the city administration would first order an independent consultant to evaluate the performance of the company.
Separately, Transjakarta president director ANS Kosasih said that the PSO would cover subsidies for Rp 110 million bus passengers per year.
'We propose a PSO for an increased number of passengers next year; around 140 million to 145 million people,' he said.
Transjakarta tickets have cost Rp 3,500 per passenger since 2004. PSO funding is used to cover operational costs that amount to Rp 10,000 per passenger.
Kosasih said this year's PSO was given at the end of the year because of the transition of Transjakarta management from the Agency's Technical Unit into a city-owned company.
