The National Police detective corps (Bareskrim) have investigated the possible involvement of the suppliers of uninterruptable power supply (UPS) machines in a graft case relating to the machines'€™ being placed in a number of schools at the expense of the Jakarta city administration.

'€œWe are investigating the vendors. If there are new suspects, we will make announcement,'€ said deputy director of the Corruption Division at the National Police detective corps Sr. Comr. Erwanto Kurniadi as reported by tribunnews.com on Thursday.

The police have named two suspects in the UPS case '€“ Alex Usman, an official at the West Jakarta Education Office, and Zaenal Soleman, an official at the Central Jakarta Education Office. The police accuse Alex and Zainal of abusing their power to benefit themselves and others, an offence that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The police have also several times questioned City Council deputy speaker Abraham '€œLulung'€ Lunggana as a witness. Lulung served from 2009 to 2014 as chairman of the City Council'€™s Commission E, which was responsible for education.

Erwanto said that the investigation into the UPS suppliers was a follow-up from the investigation into the two suspects. Alex is soon to face trial, while Zaenal'€™s case is still being examined by the prosecutors.

Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama said that there were irregularities in the 2014 budget. The irregularities included the procurement of UPS devices for dozens of state schools in West and Central Jakarta. The funding for the devices in each school was up to Rp 5.8 billion (US$445,800).
