The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday named non-active North Sumatra governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho a suspect of attempted bribery involving North Sumatra Legislative Council (DPRD) members during the council term of 2009 to 2014 and the current term, 2014 to 2019.
Acting KPK chief Johan Budi SP said the anti-graft body had named the former governor a suspect after its investigators' latest breakthrough on Monday, which followed a fairly long investigation.
"We conclude that there are two pieces of preliminary evidence, which we deem adequate cause to escalate the case from pre-investigation to investigation level," Johan said in a press conference at KPK headquarters on Tuesday evening.
The KPK commissioner said Gatot was suspected of giving, or promising, unlawful gifts to DPRD members in relation to four matters before the council. The matters were: the approval of the North Sumatra administration's budget accountability report for the year 2012-2014, the approval of the province's revised budget (APBD) 2013, the passing of the province's budget plan for 2014-2015 and the refusal of interpellation rights for North Sumatra Legislative Council members for the period of 2015.
Johan said the former governor allegedly delivered bribes and has been charged with violations of Articles 5 and 13 of Law No.31/1999 on corruption eradication.
The KPK has also named three current or former North Sumatra DPRD suspects of bribery. They are Saleh Bangun, speaker for 2009-2014; Chaidir Ritonga, deputy speaker for 2009-2014; and Ajib Shah, a DPRD member for 2009-2014.
The three lawmakers are accused of violating Articles 11 and 12 of the 1999 Corruption Eradication Law and Article 55 of the Criminal Code (KUHP). (ebf)
