debate between rival candidates for Central Sulawesi's gubernatorial election was canceled on Wednesday night, because the Provincial General Elections Commission (KPUD) forgot to bring the list of questions.
Taking place at a hotel in Palu, the second-round debate turned chaotic when the moderator, the rector of Palu Islamic State University, Zainal Abidin, opened an envelope that was supposed to contain a list of questions for the candidates ' and found it was empty.
Aired live on state-run station TVRI, Abidin then postponed the question and answer session for 10 minutes while supporters of the candidates started to protest.
KPUD Chairman Sahran Raden admitted that the list of questions, which had been submitted by a team of experts, had been forgotten. 'It's our negligence. We apologized,' Sahran said, adding that the debate was adjourned until the third-round debate on Nov. 28.
All KPUD commissioners and staffers were evacuated from the hotel in police armored vehicles to guarantee their safety from angry supporters. The election, which is scheduled for Dec. 9, is being contested by two pairs of candidates.
