he General Sudirman Cup 2015 soccer tournament kicked off on Tuesday evening with the opening match between Arema Cronus Indonesia and Gresik United at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java.
The General Sudirman Cup follows closely on the heels of the President's Cup tournament initiated by President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo after a suspension of previous domestic soccer tournaments, including the Indonesia Super League (ISL), because of a crisis resulting from an argument between the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) and the Youth and Sports Ministry, which saw Indonesia banned from international events by world soccer governing body FIFA.
Fourteen professional soccer clubs, including the President's Cup 2015 champion Persib Bandung, plus an amateur team compete for the General Sudirman Cup's title plus Rp 2.5 billion (US$183,480) in prize money.
