he National Narcotics Agency (BNN) plans to build a special prison for drug traffickers on an outer island guarded by thousands of crocodiles, says BNN head Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso.
'A team is currently visiting several outer islands in Indonesia to seek a proper location for the prison, which will later be guarded by crocodiles,' Budi said at the Asam Kumbang crocodile farm on the outskirts of Medan, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.
Budi said the prison would be built in the middle of the island, with wild crocodiles roaming the perimeter to prevent convicts from escaping.
'If a drug dealer were to be mauled by crocodiles, it is not a human rights violation, unlike if the person was shot and killed by authorities, as we can be blamed for violating human rights,' Budi argued.
He added that BNN's rationale for using crocodiles was that the very limited number of prison personnel and high number of drug convicts made it hard to monitor inmates to prevent their escape.
