he Gorontalo Municipality plans to propose three figures from the region to the central government to be declared national heroes for their significant contributions to the country.
'What they have achieved and struggled for is extraordinary in their respective fields. The proposal is our appreciation of them,' Gorontalo Mayor Marten Taha said on Tuesday.
The three figures are literary critic Hans Bague Jassin, freedom fighter Jalaludin Tantu and businessman Thayeb Gobel.
Jassin, who is known as 'the Pope of Indonesian literacy', established a literacy documentation center in Jakarta. Jalaludin was a fighter pilot and is known as one of the founders of the Indonesian Air Force, while Thayeb, the father of former trade minister Rahmat Gobel, is recognized for developing the country's electronic industry.
