S Navy pilot LCDR James Patrick Murphy, who was forced to land in Tarakan on Monday for entering the country's airspace without any permit, is still being detained at the barracks of the Indonesian Airforce (TNI AU) in the city.
'The pilot can continue the flight if he can get all the permits,' airbase commander Lt. Col. Tiopan Hutapea said.
Tiopan said Murphy, who was on leave when he piloted the Cirrus plane from Yap Island, a part of the Federated States of Micronesia, should have had the correct permits, including flight clearance from TNI AU headquarters in Jakarta, flight approval from the Ministry of Transportation and an exit permit for foreigners from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He said that Murphy had earlier planned to go to Sandakan, Malaysia and then land in Singapore before the pilot took an alternative route entering Indonesian airspace. Two Indonesian Sukhoi jet fighters intercepted Murphy's plane and forced it to land in Tarakan.
