FFI nominations announced, films set to compete for Citra

T

he committee for the 2015 Festival Film Indonesia (FFI) announced the nominations for its 21 award categories on Thursday evening; nominees will compete to bring home the Piala Citra '€” the nation'€™s most prestigious film award.

The award night will be held on Nov. 23 at Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in BSD City, Banten.

Five films are vying for the Piala Citra in the best picture category: A Copy of My Mind, Guru Bangsa: Tjokroaminoto, Mencari Hilal, Siti, and Toba Dreams.

Joko Anwar'€™s A Copy of My Mind, which premiered at the 72nd Venice Film Festival and is slated for release in Indonesia next year, is a movie about regular Indonesians and how they become entangled with the politics that surround them.

Garin Nugroho'€™s Guru Bangsa: Tjokoroaminoto is the biopic of Oemar Said Tjokoroaminoto, an Indonesian national hero, while Ismail Basbeth'€™s Mencari Hilal (Looking for Hilal) is a film centered on the story of a father and son who have different religious views, traveling together on a mission.

The black-and-white movie Siti by Eddie Cahyono tells the tale of a woman who struggles to make ends meet for her family, while Toba Dreams by Benni Setiawan is a family drama about love, conflict and how to accomplish dreams.

Guru Bangsa has garnered the most nominations in this year'€™s film festival with eight nods, followed by A Copy of My Mind with seven, while Toba Dreams and Mencari Hilal both received six nominations.

With the exception of Garin, all the directors nominated for the best picture catagory, are also nominated for best director, along with a fifth, Angga Dwimas Sasongko for Filosofi Kopi (Coffee Philosophy).

Nominees for best actors are the senior actor Deddy Soetomo in Mencari Hilal, Rio Dewanto in Love & Faith, Vino G. Bastian in Toba Dreams and Reza Rahadian who is nominated for two films, Guru Bangsa and Kapan Kawin? (When Will You Get Married?).

While the actress who have received nominations for Citra are Adinia Wirasti in Kapan Kawin?, Chelsea Islan in Di Balik 98 (Behind '€˜98), Dewi Sandra in Airmata Surga (Tears of Heaven), Marsha Timothy in Nada Untuk Asa (Tune for Asa) and Tara Basro for her role in A Copy of My Mind.

The Citra Awards, which have been organized since 1955, will be handed out in a total of 16 feature-film categories, short film, animated film, short and long documentaries and films made for television.

FFI chairwoman Olga Lydia said the selection process was conducted by a selection panel of 100 people, including directors, cinematographers, scriptwriters, actors and producers, who made their selected nominations through an online voting system.

She said the new judging system started in 2014 and was deemed fair to all contestants.

They assessed a total of 278 films, 61 of which were feature films, 18 animated movies, 11 feature-length documentaries, 53 short documentaries, 116 short films, and 19 made-for-TV films.

Following the initial tally, the results are counted by independent public accountant Deloitte.

'€œI hope the FFI selection and voting process can set a new standard for our local films, we'€™ve worked hard to improve our selection process,'€ Olga said.

She added that, for the second round of judging, the 100 judgeing would be reinforced by past winners of Piala Citra, taking the model of the Academy Awards, or the Oscars. For this year'€™s event, the judging also involves 2014 Piala Citra awardees.

'€œWe have asked all filmmaking associations to set their own guidelines, for all judges, on which aspects should be judged. For example, in the best costume or music award, this process would allow judges from outside that field to further understand what elements to judge,'€ Olga said during a visit to The Jakarta Post office on Wednesday.

Olga also said that the committee would dedicate this year'€™s FFI to legendary filmmaker Teguh Karya and his works.

Teguh Karya was known for such critically acclaimed as Badai Pasti Berlalu (The Storm Will Pass), Doea Tanda Mata, Pacar Ketinggalan Kereta (Lover Missed The Train), Ranjang Pengantin (Wedding Bed), Di Balik Kelambu (Behind the Mosquito Net) and Ibunda (Mother).

Screenings of some of his notable works will take place from Nov. 15 to 20 at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Cikini, Central Jakarta.

Olga also announced that there would be a series of events, including film screenings, at Plaza Indonesia starting on Nov. 16-20, for best film nominees as well as Teguh'€™s notable movies.

Currently, a photo exhibition on past Piala Citra winners is also on display at Plaza Indonesia, in Central Jakarta. (foy)
