hooting broke out between police and military personnel on Friday evening in Lubuklinggau, South Sumatra, in an incident that left two soldiers injured.
III/Siliwangi Military Command (Kodam) chief spokesman Col. Robertson confirmed on Saturday that the injured soldiers, identified as Capt. E. Sutrisno and Second Sgt. Deden, were members of the III/Siliwangi, which oversees Banten and West Java provinces.
'Both of them are currently being treated in a local hospital,' he said, as quoted by tribunnews.com. Robertson, however, did not explain what the two soldiers had been doing in South Sumatra, which is under the jurisdiction of Kodam II/Sriwijaya, at the time of the incident.
Separately, South Sumatra Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. R. Djarod Padavoka said the shooting incident had been caused by a misunderstanding between the police and military personnel during the investigation of the kidnapping of a resident from the neighboring Muara Enim regency.
'Muara Enim Police Buser [mobile detective] unit chased [the alleged kidnappers] as far as Lubuklinggau. As they were carrying out their duty, gunshots were heard. The team, supported by Lubuklinggau [police personnel] then took down [the shooters],' he said.
Lubuklinggau is a municipality located some 300 kilometers west of the South Sumatra provincial capital of Palembang.
