Mahyudin supports Air Force'€™s interception

P

eople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) vice chairman Mahyudin has shared support and thanks for the firm action by the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) in intercepting and forcing the landing of a plane that entered Indonesian airspace without permission. '€œBecause every inch of Indonesian territory must be guarded,'€ Mahyudin declared. '€œNobody can enter without permission.'€

Mahyudin made the statement to reporters after opening the Four Pillars Workshop being held by the Indonesian Small and Medium Enterprises Union (KUKMI) in Bali on Thursday.

He believes that '€œthe assertive action by the Air Force should serve to strengthen the image of Indonesia in the eyes of other countries'€.

'€œThat kind of approach must be consistently exhibited,'€ the MPR vice chairman added, '€œnot only in the air but also on land and at sea, despite the fact that the cost of [interceptions etc.] may be higher than the fine itself.'€

"If we are defending the country's honor and sovereignty, there is no need to complain about cost," Mahyudin added.

As reported previously, two TNI AU Sukhoi aircraft from Squadron 11 at Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base in Makassar intercepted and forced the landing of a small airplane piloted by a US citizen in Tarakan, North Kalimantan, on Nov. 9. The plane was passing through Indonesian territory without permission on its journey from the Philippines to Singapore.(+)
