s the rainy season has started to hit the city, the Jakarta administration is preparing to distribute assistance to flood victims throughout the capital in the form of electronic cards, known as e-Natura, Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said on Tuesday.
Ahok said the city administration would cooperate with Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) in distributing the card, but emphasized that the funds would be taken from the city's budget.
'I have actually had this [e-Natura card] idea since last year, but Bank DKI was not ready back then. This year, I have reached an agreement to carry out the program with BRI instead,' he continued.
He went on to say that before distributing the cards, the Social Services Agency would conduct a field inspection to ensure that the cards would be used by the right people, adding that the city administration could withdraw cards if it found any misuse.
The head of the information and mitigation department of the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Bambang Suryaputra, said each family would get between Rp 700,000 (US$51) and Rp 900,000 for every disaster.
Families, Bambang said, would have their houses and family members verified by the Social Services Agency and subdistrict officials to determine if they meet the criteria to be recipients, as well as the amount of money they will get in the cards. Bambang added that since the card could only be used in stores or vendors that have electronic data capture (EDC) machines that accept BRI cards, the city administration will distribute the EDC machines to nearby small vendors in order to help the local vendors.
'The items that can be purchased are limited to staple foods, toiletries or children's school uniforms,' he continued.
