Islands in focus: Police deny knowledge of human smuggling

T

wo police officers testified on Tuesday at the Ba'€™a District Court, Rote Ndao regency, East Nusa Tenggara province, that they did not know about the transportation of 65 migrants from the regency to New Zealand.

'€œI just knew when two boats that were used by the immigrants got stranded on Landu Island,'€ one of the officers, Brig. Victor Oematan, said.

The other officer, Brig. Dominicos Ngongo, made a similar statement, adding that they went to the island on May 31 this year and evacuated the migrants, who were from Myanmar, to the Rote Ndao Police headquarters.

Last week, the court heard the indictment against the six defendants, one captain and five crew members of the boats, who were charged with human trafficking.
