Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors have demanded a 10-year prison sentence for lawyer OC Kaligis for his alleged involvement in a bribery case involving judges and a clerk at the Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN).

'€œA 10-year prison term ['€¦] with a sentence reduction of several months for the time he has already [served],'€ KPK prosecutor Yudi Kristiana said on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co, regarding the trial held at the Jakarta Corruption Court in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The anti-graft body'€™s prosecution team also asked the panel of judges to order Kaligis to pay Rp 500 million (US$36,300), or serve an additional four months'€™ imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Kaligis is guilty of corruption crimes '€“ violating Law No.31/1999 in reference to Law No.20/2001 on corruption eradication and also the Criminal Code (KUHP).

The KPK named six suspects in the case '€“ PTUN Medan chief justice Tripeni Irianto Putro, judges Amir Fauzi and Dermawan Ginting and the court'€™s secretary Syamsir Yusfan '€“ all of whom allegedly accepted bribes. Kaligis and his staffer, M. Yagari Bhastara Guntur, or Gerry, were named suspects for allegedly bribing the judges.

The anti-graft body later also named non-active North Sumatra governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho and his second wife, Evy Susanti, suspects in the case.

Kaligis and Gerry, along with Gatot and Evy, allegedly paid Tripeni S$5,000 and US$15,000, Dermawan and Amir US$5,000 each and Syamsir US$2,000.

Prosecutors suspected that Kaligis had bribed the judges and clerk to influence their ruling over his client'€™s lawsuit submitted to PTUN Medan. Kaligis'€™ client, the North Sumatra administration'€™s finance bureau head Ahmad Fuad Lubis, filed a lawsuit with PTUN against his summons by the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) over an alleged misuse of 2012 and 2013 North Sumatra social assistance funds (Bansos). The complainant claimed that the North Sumatra Prosecutors'€™ Office had already investigated the case, and cleared his name.

Gatot reportedly asked Kaligis to accompany Fuad when the latter filed his lawsuit with the PTUN Medan. It was suspected that Kaligis'€™ bribe money had come from Gatot and Evy. (ebf)
