A middle-ranking official of the local transportation agency in Pasuruan, East Java, died on Tuesday while undergoing physical training held as part of the state defense program.

The civil servant, identified as Dyah Umiyarti Purnamaningrum, died while participating in a morning marching program, tribunnews.com reported.

Dyah complained of dizziness before being taken to a medical room where she received treatment.

She was then rushed to an emergency room at a local community health center before being pronounced dead.

Her body was taken to a local hospital in Pasuruan for an autopsy.

The Defense Ministry kicked off the Bela Negara (state defense) program in late October throughout the country'€™s 34 provinces.

The ministry said that the program was aimed at building people'€™s character, instilling discipline and building solidarity that could eventually prepare citizens to deal with threats and play a role in defending the nation.

Your comments:

If our officials spent time actually doing the public service work that they are paid to do, then the Indonesian economy would be in better shape and there would be less poverty.

With a content population, a society can be made secure even against internal threats.

It would be more sensible for the government to make its public services more productive instead of wasting time on bogus nationalist exercises.

Condolences to the family for their loss.

I saw a platoon of these baby-blue camouflaged reservists just today, standing in formation under the sun, getting their dose of discipline while being brainwashed by a chunky police officer.

Kudos to those who subject themselves to needless abuse just to be part of the state defense program.

It would be prudent for the government to give all these reservists medical check-ups prior to putting them through any kind of training.

It only makes sense that prior to subjecting people to any kind of physical training, they are medically cleared.

Had this happened in some other parts of the world, there would be some serious law suits.
