President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said Indonesia sought to increase its trade with Vietnam during a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, on the last day of the two-day 27th ASEAN Summit and other related summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday.
Presidential communications team member Ari Dwipayana said that during the meeting President Jokowi and PM Nguyen agreed to increase relations between the two countries, especially in the fields of trade and investment.
'The two leaders have agreed to realize a trade target of US$10 billion in 2018. Currently, the trade value between the two countries has reached almost $6 billion,' Ari said in a press statement on Sunday.
To increase trade between the two countries, President Jokowi offered strategic Indonesian products to Vietnam during the meeting.
'Indonesia's investments in Vietnam have grown quite significantly, reaching almost $500 million. We hope there could be an attention [on Indonesia's strategic product offer] from the Vietnamese government,' said Jokowi.
PM Nguyen warmly welcomed President Jokowi's wish. 'I will also assign our defense minister to follow up on Indonesia's investments in Vietnam,' he said.
Apart from his meeting with PM Nguyen, Jokowi is also scheduled to have bilateral meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday.
During Sunday's meeting, the Indonesian and Vietnamese leaders also agreed to speed up the settlement of exclusive economic zone (EEZ) negotiations between the two countries.
'I hope the EEZ negotiations can be completed in December,' said President Jokowi.
Apart from the EEZ, the South China Sea situation was also discussed in the meeting. President Jokowi asserted that the Indonesian government would work toward stability and security in the region.
'This is important to ensure that economic growth can happen in the region. International laws must be paid respect,' said Jokowi.
At the end of the meeting, PM Nguyen invited President Jokowi to visit Vietnam. 'Thank you for your invitation. I will immediately plan a visit to Vietnam,' said Jokowi. (ebf)
