Vice President Jusuf Kalla
Vice President Jusuf Kalla has expressed appreciation for the House of Representatives ethics council's decision to hold an open-door hearing to probe the alleged misconduct of House speaker Setya Novanto.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said reported Setya to the House ethics council last week for allegedly claiming to have had the approval of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Kalla to request shares from PT Freeport Indonesia in exchange for helping the company extend its contract and continue operating its gold mine, one the world's largest, in Papua.
'The House ethic council has done its job well. It has decided to hold an open session for the process. WE now wait for the result,' Kalla said after closing the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) at Maulana Malik Ibrahim's state-run Islamic University in Malang, East Java, on Wednesday.
According to Kalla, the open session to probe Setya's alleged misconduct would help citizens follow the process and ensure that a fair investigation took place.
The House ethic council on Tuesday decided that for the most part the council hearing of Setya's alleged ethical violation would be open to the public, although some parties invited to give their testimony have demanded that they be allowed to do so in a close-door session.
'Principally, the process will be carried out in an open-door session,' said House ethic council deputy chairman Junimart Girsang in Jakarta on Tuesday. (bbn)(+)
