The government has delayed its plan to move graft convict Labora Sitorus from his prison in Papua to Jakarta, pending the completion of the simultaneous regional elections on Dec. 9.
"Our focus is now on how to successfully hold the regional elections. So we will move [Labora] later," Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly said in Jakarta on Wednesday
Labora, a low-ranking police officer, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was required to pay fines of Rp 5 billion (US$365,501) for a number of crimes including illegal logging, fuel hoarding and money laundering, is now at Sorong correctional center in West Papua.
The government had planned to move him to Cipinang Penitentiary in Jakarta.
Labora, who suffers from a heart condition, had reportedly been treated at Pertamina Hospital in Sorong for the past week, kompas.com reported on Tuesday. He was also allowed to undergo therapy at his home in Tampa Garam district in Papua.
Labora, a former chief brigadier with the police in Raja Ampat, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment by the Supreme Court in September 2014, 13 years more than the sentence handed down by Sorong District Court in 2013.
He was brought to court when the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) detected he had a suspicious bank account worth Rp 1.5 trillion.
Head of Sorong correctional center, Maliki Hasan said Labora was severely ill and needed intensive care. The director of Pertamina Hospital in Sorong, Richard Senduk, confirmed that Labora Sitorus had been hospitalized for a week for three conditions: diabetes, hypertension and heart attack symptoms.
