The Jakarta city administration will introduce an app-based flood early warning system called the Jakarta Flood Information Platform (JAFIP) enabling residents to immediately receive or deliver flood information.

Through the app, which is only being released for android operating system phones, residents could interact with call center operators, head of Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency'€™s (BPBD) information and mitigation division Bambang Surya Putra said in Jakarta on Friday as reported by bertitajakarta.com.

Through the app, Bambang said, residents could both receive and give information about flooding in their neighborhood or other places across the city.

'€œThe people can give information about flooding through Twitter, which is integrated with the Jakarta Smart City system,'€ said Bambang, referring to an application owned by the Jakarta city administration to give information to the general public about conditions in the capital.

According to Bambang, BPBD'€™s operation control center (Pusdalop) in cooperation with two telecommunication companies PT Telkom and Indosat, would expand the capacity of the disaster alert call center lines from its current four lines.

'€œSo if there is an emergency situation, information can immediately be delivered to the general public,'€ said Bambang, adding that BPBD'€™s employees and volunteers could become operators in an emergency situation.

The disaster alert call center can be reached via 021-164 to 100.

The rainy season arrived in Jakarta and its upstream areas of Depok and Bogor earlier this month.

A number of flood-prone areas have already been inundated, particularly those close to the Ciliwung River. The rainy season is expected to reach its peak in January and February next year. (bbn)(+)
