he Papua Health Office has sent a pediatrician and a physician to Mbuwa district, Nduga regency, Papua, following the deaths of 41 children from an unknown disease early this month.
'The team, consisting of pediatrician Imma C. and physician Berry Wopari, is heading to Nduga via Wamena. Besides the team, a team from the directorate general of health has also been deployed to Nduga,' Papua Health Office head Aloisyus Giay told the media in Jayapura on Thursday.
The 41 children's deaths in Nduga, said Papua legislative councilor Yan Mandenas, indicates that health care in Papua is in a poor state, especially in remote regencies. Mandenas said the Papua governor had set aside 80 percent of the special autonomy funds to be managed by the regencies and cities while the remaining 20 percent would be managed by the provincial administration.
'Of the 80 percent special autonomy funds allocated to regencies and cities across Papua, 15 percent is earmarked for healthcare improvement. Despite the considerable amount for health care, people still lack access to it,' said Mandenas.
