Yogyakarta's new international airport in the Kulon Progo regency will provide a significant effect to the city's tourism and economy, said Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

According to a report by tempo.co, Kalla wanted the airport's construction to start as early as 2016 as it was an urgent matter.

"[The construction] is urgent [because it concerned Yogyakarta's] tourism and economy," said Kalla after a meeting with Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X in the Yogyakarta on Thursday.

During the meeting, Yogyakarta Development and Planning Agency head, Tavip Agus Rayanto, said that Kalla requested the city government to prepare a list of infrastructure requirements involving transportation network to the airport, especially related to tourism.

The development of the new airport is currently still in the phase of socialization and land measurement. The latter was previously delayed due to a budget issue, in which the amount submitted by Yogyakarta National Land Agency was considered higher than the value set by the Finance Ministry. (anh/kes)
