ANADO: Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo has expressed support for the General Elections Commission's (KPU) recent decision to annul the candidacy of Jimmy Rimba Rogi and Boby Daud as mayor and deputy mayor for the upcoming local election in Manado, North Sulawesi.
'The KPU has to be firm. If the rule says A, it has to be firm with A,' Tjahjo told reporters in Manado on Friday.
Earlier this week, the KPU canceled the right of the pair to run for office due to Jimmy's status as a graft convict on parole. The decision was soon followed by a series of massive protests from supporters of the former Manado mayor, who was declared guilty in 2009 of embezzling Rp 68.8 billion (US$4.99 million) from the city's budget.
Tjahjo also said that the same firmness must also be shown by the security apparatus should conflict erupt due to protests. 'Ripples are usual. That's democracy,' he said.
