State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno said on Monday that national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina would work together to boost performance and efficiency.

Rini said that it be would more effective for two state-owned firms involved in similar areas of business to cooperate.

"I hope there will be more joint operations between these two, for example Pertamina has a lubricant business that is marketed globally, while Garuda could also recommend lubricants to Pertamina for aviation,'€ she asserted, adding that no takeovers or mergers would occur yet, but Garuda would rent Pertamina'€™s airfield.

According to Rini, since both companies also own hotels (Inna Garuda and Patra Jasa), working together would help reduce costs and increase efficiency.

Pertamina president director Dwi Sutjipto said that the company had established Pelita Aircraft Service to support operations in remote areas. The state oil company has airfields in Pondok Cabe, Dumai, Cilacap, Cepu, Lubuk Linggau, Pangkalan Bun, Ketapang and Yogyakarta.

Garuda Indonesia president director M. Arief Wibowo said Pertamina and Garuda Indonesia would begin operating Pondok Cabe Airfield in March 2016, the commercialization of which would mark the start of cooperation between the two companies.

'€œIn the beginning the business will use an ATR 72-600 aircraft with the Citilink brand,'€ Arief said.

Garuda will target cities in South Sumatra (Palembang, Bandar Lampung and Lubuk Linggau), South Kalimantan (Pangkalan Bun) and southern Java (Yogyakarta, Cilacap, Semarang, Ketapang).

"Those are underserved areas," he asserted.

There would be two phases of renovations, the first of which would cover terminal repairs and runway hardening, Arief said. The second phase will see the expansion of the runway to the golf area currently separated by public road. An underpass will be constructed to connect the fields. (dan)(+)
